PA Speakers used as a bass amp for guitar?

I have a Peavey 500 watt PA speakers Sanctuary that I use for vocals. Recently I have been looking for buy a bass amp stack given that now play bass for a new band that I am asked the man I bought my PA speakers around taxis under, and he said I could use my PA speakers as a base cabinet, and I only had to buy a bass amp head to connect too.
