Ceiling Speakers Polk

What kind of In-ceiling speakers should I get?

Hello everyone, I have just remodeled my kitchen which is a little over 12x12 feet. I am looking at some in ceiling speakers but cant make a real decision. I have been looking at Polk, Boston Acoustic, Niles, Pioneer and some others. I only want them for music, I would like a great sound but I don't need to rattle the dishes either. I was looking at a pair of 6.5" to 7 or 8" max dia. And would like to stay within $200. Any suggestions to help me decide would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest buying a pair of 6.5" coaxial car speakers. I've seen Alpines go for as little as $50 a pair. Depending on the brand you choose, you might have to get a little creative to get them to install in the ceiling but it shouldn't be too difficult. It is definitely worth the money you can save as opposed to buying speakers that are marketed for ceiling/in-wall use. Many are basically the same as a car speaker and some are even 4 ohm just like car speakers are. The only REAL difference is their over inflated price. Keep in mind that a car speaker is designed to withstand the extreme temperature environment of an automobile so a kitchen ceiling would be a stroll in the park for car speakers. Let's say you find a reputable brand of speakers for $50-$100. Then buy a Niles 50 watt in-wall volume control with impedance matching circuitry. They retail for about $59.95. Now you can have a great brand name pair of speakers AND be able to control the volume in the same room for well under $200. Of course you have to run wire from the amp to the volume control and then from the volume control to the speakers. Trust me, it's worth a little extra work. Don't skimp on the volume control. Be sure to only get the Niles brand. I've installed all the other brands like Speco, Russound, Radio Shack and they are not worth the money you save. The Niles are extremely reliable. Hope this helps. Good luck.
